Olea europaea ‘Manzanillo’ — Olive Tree

Classic Spanish olive with a rounded form.

Dense grey-green foliage and naturally lollipop habit makes ‘Manzanillo’ an easy choice for driveways, courtyards and screening. White spring blossom is followed by ornamental fruit.

Suits pots or in-ground planting; thrives in full sun and free-draining soils. Excellent heat, wind and coastal tolerance once established; simple to maintain—light prune for shape after winter.

Best for: modern Mediterranean palettes, avenue plantings, evergreen screens, statement pots.

Size & habit: compact-rounded, good lower branching for screen lines.

Origin: Mediterranean Region
Attracts: Birds and friendly insects

Plant Guide

What to use me for: Feature/specimen in modern Mediterranean or coastal designs. Evergreen screen or avenue/driveway planting. Large pots (great for entrances). Can be clipped for formal shapes/topiary.
I grow to: In-ground: 5–7 m H × 4–5 m W (naturally rounded, dense habit). In containers: more compact
Features: Dense grey-green foliage with a naturally rounded canopy. White spring blossom (pollinator friendly), followed by ornamental fruit. Smooth, silvered trunks; holds shape well with light pruning.

Plant Care

Where to place me: Full sun (6+ hours) with good airflow. Suits Brisbane heat/humidity; coastal and windy sites are fine once established.
How far to space me: Avenues/screens: 3–5 m centres. For tighter, formal lines, prune and plant ~2.5–3 m apart.
Soil conditions: Free-draining soils are essential (sandy/loam ideal). If on clay, raise the bed or improve drainage; avoid water-logging. Mulch to keep roots cool, keeping mulch off the trunk
Extra care
Water: regular while establishing (first summer), then deep and occasional
Feed: light slow-release fertiliser in spring
Prune: light shape late winter; remove suckers/watershoots as needed
Note on fruit in SEQ: Treat primarily as an ornamental in warm coastal QLD—fruit set can be variable. Planting different cultivars nearby may help, but don’t rely on heavy crops.
