A timeless Mediterranean feature tree, prized for its elegant grey-green foliage and sculptural branching. Known as one of the classic Tuscan oil varieties, Frantoio adds character and structure to courtyards, gardens, and landscapes. In Spring to early Summer, clusters of small white flowers appear, followed by ornamental olives.

Easy to grow, drought tolerant once established, hardy in a wide range of soils, and highly suited to pots or in-ground planting.

Plant Guide

What to use me for: I’m a classic Mediterranean evergreen, perfect as a feature tree, screen, or windbreak. My silvery-grey foliage and sculptural branching make me a standout for courtyards, formal gardens, and modern landscapes. I’m suitable for feature planting, avenue planting, screening, topiary, or large pots.
I grow to: I’ll reach up to 6–8 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide in the ground, though I can be pruned to your desired size and shape. When grown in pots or containers, I’ll remain more compact.
Features: I produce attractive narrow grey-green leaves with silvery undersides that shimmer in the light. In Spring, I flower with small white blossoms that attract pollinators, followed by ornamental olive fruit. My gnarled trunk and spreading canopy add character with age, making me more striking the older I get.

Plant Care

Where to place me: Full sun is ideal for me — I thrive in bright, open positions with good airflow. I love warm, dry climates and am perfect for coastal and Mediterranean-style gardens.
How far to space me: If planting as a grove or screen, give me 3–5 metres between trees. In smaller gardens or avenues, I can be pruned and spaced more closely for a structured look.
Soil Conditions: I prefer free-draining soil and will tolerate poor, sandy, or even slightly rocky ground. I dislike heavy or waterlogged soil, so ensure good drainage. Mulch well to keep my roots cool and retain soil moisture.
Extra-Care: I’m hardy and low-maintenance once established, with very low water needs. I’ll appreciate deep, occasional watering during extended dry or hot periods. A light annual prune after fruiting or flowering will keep my canopy tidy and encourage fresh growth. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in Spring, ideally one formulated for fruit trees or Mediterranean plants, to support healthy foliage and flowering.
