Pot Size

A vigorous Italian oil variety with silvery grey-green foliage and sculptural branching. Excellent for modern Mediterranean or coastal designs, feature pots and informal screening. Spring blossoms attract pollinators; ornamental fruit follows in warm spots.

Tough, drought-tolerant once established, clips neatly, and thrives in SE QLD, Brisbane’s warm, sunny conditions. In warm SEQ, treat primarily as an ornamental (fruiting can be variable); best performance in full sun and freely draining soils.

Origin: Mediterranean region
Attracts: Birds & pollinators • Edible fruit (culinary)

Plant Guide

What to use me for: Feature/specimen for street appeal and modern landscapes, paired pots, olive grove plantings or loose screening. Plays beautifully with stone, timber and coastal palettes.

I grow to: 6–8 m tall by 4–6 m wide in the ground (can be kept smaller with pruning). In pots I remain compact and take shaping well.

Features: Evergreen grey-green leaves with silvery undersides, characterful trunk and branches that improve with age, small white spring flowers; edible olives. Reliable, heat-loving growth in SE QLD.

Plant Care

Where to place me: Full sun (6+ hours) with good airflow. Suits Brisbane’s warm, dry conditions.

How far to space me: For a grove or screen: 3–5 m apart (closer if regularly pruned for a tighter look). For avenues, match spacing to desired canopy spread (often 4–5 m).

Soil conditions: Free-draining soils (sandy/loam ideal). Avoid waterlogging. Mulch to keep roots cool but keep mulch off the trunk.

Extra care: Very drought-tolerant, once established. Deep, occasional water in extended heat. Light annual prune after flowering/fruiting to keep shape and encourage fresh growth. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser (fruit-tree/Mediterranean blend). Tolerates coastal winds and heat; light frost once established.
