Backhousia citriodora 'Lemon Myrtle' Tree

What to use me for: I’m a fragrant soft screening and formal hedge option, a superb feature tree, and great for large pots near entries or alfresco areas. Perfect where scent and lush evergreen foliage are desired.

I grow to: Typically 6–8 m tall and 3–5 m wide in the ground; can be maintained 3–4 m with pruning. More compact in containers.

Features: Glossy, aromatic leaves with strong lemon oil; pollinator-attracting creamy-white flowers in late spring–summer; takes clipping well; edible foliage for teas and cooking.

Where to place me: Full sun to part shade. Provide good airflow; shelter from harsh, dry winds and frost.
How far to space me: For a tight hedge, plant at 1.2–1.5 m centres. For a softer screen, 1.8–2.5 m.
Soil Conditions: Prefers moist, free-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid waterlogging; in heavier soils, improve drainage and plant slightly mounded. Mulch to keep roots cool.
Extra-Care: Water regularly to establish; then moderate water needs (deep soaks in extended heat). Clip 2–3/yr to hold a narrow, formal line or harvest fresh tips. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for natives/evergreens. Protect from frost.
