An iconic Mediterranean olive tree prized for its sculptural grey-green foliage and smooth, silver-toned trunks. ‘Kalamata’ brings instant structure and timeless character to landscaped gardens, pool surrounds and for street appeal.
In South-East Queensland, ‘Kalamata’ performs beautifully as an architectural or ornamental specimen or evergreen screen, with fruiting varying seasonally.
Drought-tolerant and easy to grow in freely draining soil. Thrives in full sun and coastal conditions, equally suited to large pots or garden planting. Low maintenance and long-lived.
Height: Can be pruned to shape; naturally grows several metres tall.
Origin: Mediterranean region
Attracts: Birds and beneficial insects
Plant Guide
Plant Guide
What to use me for: Feature/specimen in modern Mediterranean or coastal gardens. Evergreen screen or windbreak. Avenue/driveway planting. Large pots or clipped topiary.
I grow to: In-ground: 6–8 m H × 4–6 m W (can be maintained smaller with pruning). In containers: more compact.
Features: Narrow grey-green leaves with silvery undersides. White spring blossom (pollinator friendly), followed by ornamental fruit. Trunks and branching gain sculptural character with age.
Plant Care
Plant Care
Where to place me: Full sun (6+ hours) with good airflow. Suits Brisbane heat/humidity; coastal and windy sites are fine once established.
How far to space me: Avenues/screens: 3–5 m centres. For tighter, formal lines you can prune and plant ~2.5–3 m apart.
Soil conditions: Free-draining soil is essential; sandy/loam ideal. If you have heavy clay, raise the bed or improve drainage; avoid water-logging. Mulch to keep roots cool, but keep mulch off the trunk.
Extra care
Water: regular while establishing (first summer), then deep and occasional
Feed: light slow-release fertiliser in spring
Prune: light shape late winter; remove any suckers/watershoots.
Note on fruit in SEQ: Treat primarily as an ornamental in warm coastal QLD—fruit set can be variable. Nearby different cultivars may help, but don’t rely on heavy crops.
